 Dixie music needed urgently!

Hi,

I have a concert to do in less than two weeks, which is due to include a dixie number with a small combo. I ordered some sheet music (Hal Leonard combo paks) four weeks ago and it still hasn't arrived. It's super-important that we play something with a trad group because the concert is being held in memory of a great trumpeter for whom dixieland was a real passion. But we haven't practised together yet and we have no music! Whilst we can improvise a bit, we need individual parts, not just a lead sheet with chords. I can't seem to find anywhere in the UK that does this sort of sheet music, and certainly nobody who could guarantee that I'd get it in the next few days. I live in Wilthisre but I'd be willing to drive a fair distance to collect it so that I wasn't reliant on the postal service!

If there's anyone who can help in any way, please, please get in touch!

Check out www.dfsheetmusic.com Clyde Grabski may have something you can use and you can download it and print it yourself.

Transcribe something from a recording; no need to even leave the house.

Si Zentner published some very good arrangements of dixieland for combos. He had a music store in Burbank and played the clarinet and saxophone regularly in Los Angeles clubs prior to his passing. Could a local library have arrangements that you could Xerox? Good luck!

I have some tunes that are no longer under copyright. There should be some that will help but I wasn't able to attach them. If you write to me at
hjacobs1@sympatico.ca I'll send them to you.

If you don't mind a trip to Oxford, (more reasonable from Swindon than Burbank is) then check out Blackwells Music. I don't know if they will be able to help - I only know them by reputation, not experience. You can google them to find out details, and a phone call may be useful.

(start slightly off-topic rant)
I know everybody is trying to be helpful, but sometimes it is worth looking at where the original poster is located. A shop in Los Angeles (for example) is not a lot of use to someone in the UK. For ordering stuff this may not be a problem, but if face-to-face is needed or go-and-collect, then at least the same Country would be useful. At the same time, someone looking for a service could help themselves by saying "does anyone know where in country X I can find..."
(end rant)

Thanks for your suggestions. Cyde Grabski's website did the trick - I now have three suitable pieces of music and a resource for plenty more (big band, 10-piece and trad combo). The PDFs were emailed to me within a couple of hours of my Paypal payment - huge thanks to Richard!

P.S. Mike - I do go to Blackwells on a fairly regular basis but they don't have much in the way of Dixieland. There used to be a much better music shop in Oxford - Russell Acott's - but I think they have closed down, more's the pity. Thanks for the suggestion, though - yes, Oxford would have been within easy driving distance!

There are good dixieland combo books online at musicnotes.com for about $6 each part. These are well written by a Mr. Zep Meisner. I played from them in a combo at the plaza of the new Los Angeles Police Department Headquarters a while back

Delivery time, shipping to the UK, and availability could be checked to see if you can get them in time. Good luck!

I am so happy for your being able to get the music from Clyde. I play in a 19 piece big band and we use quite a few of the arrangements he has for sale.

So pleased you recommended the website. We played through the music last night and it's just what we were looking for. In fact, it was so much fun that we might start a regular trad group! Looks like I might be returning to Clyde for more music!
