 Clarinet Pieces for beginners
Author: Vebjørn

Hey, I just started playing the clarinet. I've been playing the guitar and the piano for a couple of years, but now the clarinet is pulling my attention. My aim is to play jazz clarinet, but I still think that it's important to have some classical training. I've been googling "Clarinet pieces for beginners" and similar key words, but all I find on the web is simple melodies like "hot cross buns". I'm looking for some more inspiring material, but still not too challenging. I've played for a couple of months, and I've been spending a lot of time with short, simple melodies. Now I'd like to take on a longer and bigger piece, but I can only find really hardcore stuff. Does anybody here have any suggestions? Preferably in the key of C major or A minor, F major or D minor, G major or E minor. That's about as far as I want to go regarding accidentals. No more than one sharp or flat, and preferably zero.

Thanks in advance guys! ;)

Check out Standard of Excellence Festival Solos, books 1 and 2 (Kjos). There are some nice selections in these books, the solos are a minute or two long, the editing is outstanding, and CDs are included.

Just curious about the level of difficulty about those Standard of Excellence books above. I notice that the sample page for book one is all chalumeau. Are all the pieces similar? I'm looking for some fun music for a beginner with a year experience in my own household. I'm actually looking for music that crosses the register break but is still pretty easy. (Book 2 looked too difficult). Right now he's playing Christmas carols but that will wear thin in a month.

Paul Harris' Summer Sketches for Clarinet and piano, the first 3 or 4 pieces are entirely in the low register, and none of the rest go above written A above the staff, I've taught these pieces a number of times to younger clarinet students. Also check the Harold Dexter A Tune a Day, there's even Amazing Grace in there all for the low register. Music Through Time, Book 1 (there are 4 total) ed. by Paul Harris is full of pieces that only uses the low register, and the 2nd book adds the lower part of the clarion register.

To answer the question about the Standard of Excellence books--
I'm much more familiar with the second book than the first. In the second,
the first few solos are quite easy, much easier than those near the end. I'm assuming it's the same with the first book. Contact Kjos with your questions--their customer service is excellent.
