Does anyone know what kind of horn this is. I don't even need to know the brand, but what kind of clarinet is this?

At first glance, it looks like an albert system Eb alto clarinet. However, it also looks a little bit stubby, so it's more likely a Saxonette (which was marketed by Gretsch, and perhaps others). Here's a link to some info: http://hem.passagen.se/eriahl/saxonette.htm

I've run across these before. Strange little creatures, aren't they?

I vote Albert system Alto. Any dimensions known? IMO Diameter looks too large for a saxonette.

Definitely a Saxonette which is just a Bb clarinet with a metal crook and upturned bell to make it look like a mini bass clarinet or saxophone shape.

Alto clarinets will have a longer crook and bell as well as longer keys and some covered fingerplates as an open hole simple/Albert system alto will have some pretty wide finger spacing to the point of being impossible to play.

On second thought - maybe an A saxonette?

It's a Saxonette. See:

They're something of a collectors item now.

There is a Bb clarinet of this configuration that was referred to as a "Clariphone". I happen to have a metal clarinet with curved top and curved up bell that says Buescher on the bell. It plays quite well and I've never seen one like it. The bell on this one looks like a Buescher bell.

Hey peeps, forgive my ignorance but what is the point of a saxonette?

Just a novelty clarinet I suppose.

Clariphone and Saxonette are pretty much the same instrument from 2 manufacturers. Gretsch called theirs Saxonette, Buescher called it Clariphone. I think it was an attempt to get better sound projection.

Thanks for the info guys!
Would the mouthpiece have been a fairly standard clarinet one?
Even if it that is the case it surely must have been at an angle like a saxophone?

Yeah, a standard clarinet mouthpiece would've been used and the angle will allow the instrument to be held close to the body while playing but keeping the mouthpiece at a high angle like a sax which most Jazz players tend to do.

Well it is for sure a Buescher Saxonette. If those are standard 3inch bricks behind it I still think it might be ab A saxonette.......pretty rare.
