 barrels for E11 France
Author: TammieW

Hello-

My daughter has had her E11 France B flat clarinet for about a year now. It came with a 65 mm barrel. This barrel is too short for her. We are having a hard time finding another, longer barrel that will even fit on the instrument. We've tried several other Buffet barrels and a Backun. Most will not even go on the instrument at all. Is this a common problem or do we just have an oddball instrument? Thank you for your input, Tammie

The E11 France is known for this. There was a period where quality control in the factory was poor, and this problem is the most common result. Take the top joint and barrel to a tech and have him ease it to fit. Does the barrel stick on the wood or on the cork, or is it just for the last few millimetres?

Sounds like the original barrels fits, at least she didn't mention a problem. It seems that only other Buffet barrels, from different models, don't fit. It's possible that the tenon is too big and the original barrel socket was made bigger to fit, but also likely that the tenon is just a bigger diameter on this model.

By "not go on the instrument" I assume the tenon is too big for the barrel and not the barrel being too loose. You can have the tenon reduced but then the original barrel will probably be loose. You can also have a new barrel socket enlarged to fit the tenon, but of course you can't try it before...

My E11 was much the same, even with a barrel from another E11. On mine the problem was the diameter of the wood between the cork and the body of the joint, which was larger than the end of the tenon. Since I sanded it back a hair I've had no further problems. It all comes down to sloppy QA during manufacture. I've fixed several E11's with the same problem since then.

Correct, the Backun barrel is extremely tight on the tenon. In fact, last night it got stuck and it took some time to get it off. I just hope we did not damage anything. The original barrel fits fine. I don't think it is a cork issue. Thanks for your input. Perhaps one of our area techs would be willing to work on this for us. Tammie

Tony, you're right in general and actually the E11 France is one of the models where this is most common for some reason. I've seen a couple of E11 France clarinets that couldn't even be assembled completely. But what I meant was, the original barrel fits fine, so when "fixing" the issue, make sure it doesn't make the original barrel too loose (unless you don't mind it being loose...), which could definitely happen depending on how tight other barrels are and how good of a fit the current barrel is.

Hi Nitai.
You're quite right, it would be easy to introduce a new problem here. On the few I've seen the problem seems to be that the tenon does not have parallel sides. It was only necessary to remove a tiny amount of material from the body end of the tenon to fix it. The sockets were OK.
