Orpheus in the Underworld Overture Clarinet Cadenza...
Author: Chris P

I've played this numerous times in concert bands (both clarinet and oboe) and just wondering which is the generally accepted way to play the cadenza.

There are two ways which I've heard it played:

The first is how I'd approach it with the break after the trill before the second held low F and the last F-Gb trill starting on the F (1:04-1:31):

And the second is how I've heard it played by military bands with the break after the second held low F (before the minor key run-up) and the last F-Gb trill starting on the Gb (1:02-1:34):

Out of the two versions (A and B), which do you normally expect to hear or would you normally play?

Here's the clarinet part (with errors!): http://javanese.imslp.info/files/imglnks/usimg/2/21/IMSLP170836-PMLP24816-Offenbach_Orpheus_Overture_Clarinets__A__1__2_and__B__1__2.pdf

There is no "right way" either way works, I tend to favour the second but it is a cadenza after all so play it the way you feel it best.

Stan played it well - didn't like the 2nd

I agree there is no right or wrong way as it's a cadenza which is open to interpretation (and just wanted to find out how public opinion is divided), but I feel the way it's played in example A is more balanced and that's what I've heard in orchestral recordings.

Both phrases start with the held note which leads into the arpeggio and end on the trill, although the 2nd phrase (clarinet Bb minor) is resolved with the held final F before the oboe solo (orchestral version in concert Gm or military band version in the horrendous key of Abm!) comes in.

I think the last time I played it it was the latter...but now hearing Drucker play it, I think the phrasing might be a bit "tighter." A little better, more manageable to play. It does seem like the first part should conclude at the low F, though, like the second phrase (on the throat F), the way the Koreans played it. Ach...

I see merits to both ways. Now I'm torn...thanks.
