 What is this Clarinet?

Okay, recently I bought a Buffet Clarinet from a well respected clarinet teacher. She says it is a R13 Buffet but it doesn't have any makers marks on the body or barrel. The bell has a worn label that says Buffet. The serial number is 928,XXX. The clarinet says on the lower joint that it was made in Germany. Were R13s ever made in Germany? If not, what clarinet do you think this is? It plays well, so I don't have any problems with it yet.

It's most likely an E11 if it's wood and states it's made in Germany. The more recent German E11s had the logos printed on instead of heat stamped (or branded) into the joints so the logos could easily have worn off.

While R13s aren't marked with the model number, they will always have 'Made in France' under all the logos stamped onto every joint.

If it has a cutout in the wood under the right-hand pinky cluster then it's an R13. If it doesn't then it's probably an R11

She is wrong ; R13's are made in France.
That serial number is consistent with E11's.
Lets hope you paid an E11 price for the horn.

Wet44,

I live and teach/perform clarinet in Charlottesville. If you would like to contact me offline, I would be happy to certify what model of Buffet you have.

If you are in the public school bands in the area any director can give you my phone number. My email is: tamesjobin@hotmail.com

For what it's worth, my R13 (610thousand) is only marked as a R13 by engraving on the rear of barrel and the bell.
All 5 pieces have the "made in France" logo
