Help with recital program

I'm looking at doing a piece that would go well with Ponchielli's Quartetto for wind quartet and orchestra. It would be a concert that lasts roughly 30-40 minutes and the Ponchielli is around 15-18 minutes long. Does anybody have any suggestions? The piece/pieces could be with piano or orchestra.

How about the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante, K. 279b, in the un-authentic version that includes clarinet? http://imslp.org/wiki/Sinfonia_concertante_in_E-flat_major,_K.297b/Anh.C_14.01_%28Mozart,_Wolfgang_Amadeus%29 Your flutist won't be happy, though.

I'm sure Dance of the Hours exists in a quintet version, which would be a good encore.

Il Convegno is great fun, but an all Ponchielli concert would be excessive.

The Mendelssohn Konzertstucks, op. 114 #1 and 2 are also possible, if you have another clarinetist and the other quintet members don't mind you hogging the spotlight.

The Poulenc Sextet is great. The Thuille Sextet is less familiar, but for a good reason -- it's deadly dull.

I rather like the piece.

FWIW, Strauss dedicated his tone poem Don Juan to Thuille.

Ken,

What's to say that the Sinfonia Concertante with clarinet is not Mozart's original? I read that the person who commissioned the work in Paris was well known for re-arranging parts for flute. I think the jury is out on that one personally.

According to the NMA, it's doubtful Mozart composed the work at all.

Robert Levin wrote a 472 page book titled "Who Wrote the Mozart Four-Wind Concertante?" I don't own it (used copies sell for hundreds of dollars), but as I recall he thinks it's by Mozart, except that the solo parts were originally for flute, oboe, horn and bassoon. He's published and recorded an edition with that instrumentation. Current scholarly opinion is that it's not by Mozart. I'm of two minds. Sometimes it sounds like Mozart, but a lot of it doesn't. Still, it's a fine piece.

Ken,

Thanks very much for those suggestions. I will definitely take them into consideration! The Ponchielli is for the strange combination of flute, oboe, clarinet and e flat clarinet so it would require me finding a bassoonist and a horn if I were to attempt the Poulenc! The concert should really centre around me as a soloist, and as the Ponchielli is a chamber work, I'm looking for a piece that would make me stand out. Any suggestions with that? I did the Mendelssohn concertpiece no. 1 last year and it went down quite well!

The two solo parts are equal and call for VERY fast fingers and hair-trigger coordination. Stanley and Naomi Drucker make a specialty of it. Done at the correct (warp) speed, it sparkles like champagne. Even a little bit slower and it's flat beer.
