Concertos for Clarinet and Wind Orchestra
Author: cigleris

Hi Everyone,

I wonder if you guys can let me know about the most recent premiers of concertos for clarinet and wind orchestra that have happened in the US. Could you also tell if they have been premiered outside of the US.

I have a possible opportunity with Devon Youth Wind Orchestra which I was the leader of about fifteen years ago and would like to find a good piece which will challenge myself and the group.

Thanks in advance.

Artie Shaw, "Concerto for Clarinet". I have a very nice arrangement for wind ensemble that I have used many times. For more info, contact me off line.

Sorry William, Artie Shaw is not an option. Looking to give the UK premier of something that was written recently. I have a vague memory that John Yeh premiered something within the last 12 months.

Any help would be appreciated

James David, Andy Keenan, Kevin Walczyk, Roger Zare, Michael-Thomas Foumai, Michael Gandolfi, Jere Hutcheson, Dana Wilson, Richard Lavenda, Scott McAllister, Stephen McNeff, and Philip Sparke (along with a handful of others I only have written down but know very little about) have all written concertos since 2000 (except McAllister, his was written in 1996).

If you want more info on any of these send me an e-mail.

If you're looking within the past year or two, the first four I listed are in that category. Not sure about a piece premiered by John Bruce Yeh.

Yeh premiered a piece in 2011 called Liquid Ebony by James Stephenson but that's with Orchestra.

I don’t know if this can be useful for you, but I like very much Oscar Navarro’s “Clarinet Concerto” (for orchestra or arranged for band by its own composer). The Concerto is dedicated to the Belgian clarinetist Eddy Vanoosthuyse and was premiered in Brussels in 2007.
You can hear an excerpt on composer’s web or watch some performances on YouTube:

By the way, recently Oscar Navarro has premiered his “II Concerto for Clarinet and orchestra” with Jose Franch-Ballester as soloist.

Dingo, thanks for posting the Oscar Navarro links. I hadn't heard of Navarro, but this is great music!

Sorry Peter and "Buster"--guess I'm bett'n too old to make suggestions for you young'ns. The arrangement I mentioned was premired by me six years ago, so it is relatively new. B4 I had it done, there seemed to be no other wind arrangements that were any good. Regardless, the AS Concerto is fun to play and ubber fun for listeners--as has been evident for my last seven performances. Good luck, guys.

Not at all William, I would be interested to see your arrangement. The only one here in the UK is that done by a member of the Royal Marines. I saw the score when I was 15 with the possibility of doing it then. Sadly the parts could not be found in the Royal Marines School of Music.

I would recommend the Ticheli Clarinet Concerto, to throw another suggestion out there. The premiere occurred within the past year or two, and I don't know how much it has gotten some playing time.

There's a recording on Frank's website (sorry no hyperlink):
http://www.manhattanbeachmusiconline.com/frank_ticheli/html/mp3_ticheli.html

It's ok. The tempo is a little slow, but the technique seems to be there.
