 Walter Grabner Chedeville Mouthpiece???
Author: mikooksaram
Date:   2012-08-13 04:02

I recently found out that Mr. Walter Grabner, one whose mouthpieces have a very good reputation, once made Chedeville-style mouthpieces from this thread: http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=375378&t=375378
Does anybody know why he stopped making them? The OP of the above thread did not mention why, although he says that he was told why. Could I learn the reason too?

Walter is a wonderful guy to work with -- If you contact him directly you'll probably get an answer and a suggestion as to what he offers currently tha is better than his Chedeville mouthpieces.

No one discontinues a successful product. It's either unsuccessful or they improve upon it.

I talked to him about them a while back as i wish he had never stopped.

He explained to me that they blanks he got from the company for the chedeville mouthpiece were not consistent. He ended up having blanks shipped to him that were unuseable, and not able to be faced. Since he had to throw away some of them, but had still paid for them, it just wasn't efficient for him to continue using the and wonder how many of the next batch would be tweakable, how many he'd have to throw away, and it simply wasn't the quality control he needed. About the same time, his kaspar style blanks were doing well and had better consistency, so he stuck with those and he's certainly doing well enough!

Makes good business sense to me, although i do miss those chedeville blanks. If only his chedeville supplier had a little better quality control with those blanks!

If you want a grabner chedeville mouthpiece, your best bet is to buy an old chedeville or chedeville style blank (such as the chadash blank) and ask if he will a facing in it.

If you are set on having a Chedeville style, there are many who make Chedeville style mouthpieces. Gregory Smith has had a successful model for many years.

It's true, I do not have a Chedeville style mouthpiece at this time. I have preferred to stay with and perfect my other mouthpiece styles.

However, stay tuned, this situation might change.

Several are under consideration. All blanks have their strong and weak points. When I make a decision, and am ready to release a product, I will let everyone know. Until then...............
