hello, I accidently chipped the plastic part of my clarinet. it is the cork section that goes into the bell. the cork is fine but the plastic around it broke off. It still plays fine but I'm afraid it might crack again. is there any way music repair shop would be able to fix just that little bit with out replacing the whole lower section? please, any feedback would be much appriciated!

I would think so. Call a shop and find out!

Tenon repair is a staple of most well equipped shops.

The old tenon is drilled out and a new "plug" is epoxied in. These "plugs", called tenon repair kits, are readily available from supply houses like Ferree's. It's an easy repair if you have the right equipment.

The description in the first post isn't completely clear but it doesn't sound like the tenon was damaged so much that it requires a tenon replacement.

Since you say "the plastic around it broke off" and "It still plays fine" it is suggesting that there is some chip missing at the end of the tenon as opposed to the tenon itself breaking off.

Maybe you can post a photo or explain more specifically what part and how much of it is broken? Either way it should be possible to repair without replacing the joint (even if the tenon completely broke off).

If your plastic clarinet is a student model, rebuilding would cost as much as the value of the clarinet. If you have one of the standard models (e.g., Bundy or Vito), you'll be better off getting a "for parts only" duplicate on eBay or Goodwill and simply using the lower joint of that. These instruments are produced in large numbers to a single design, and a replacement joint will be indistinguishable from the original.
