 accompaniment equipment

A very long time ago when I was at music camp at James Madison University, the clarinet representative (not professor) brought with him an interesting piece of equipment. It used a microphone attached to the bell of the clarinet, and it would play the orchestral/piano accompaniment along with your solo.

Does anyone know the name of this gizmo, and how much is costs? I have recently started playing again and would be interested in purchasing one...if it's not too expensive.

If it is...are there sites online that offer accompaniment mp3s and the like?

Thanks in advance!

I was at work...so I Googled this a bit more.

Hello Clarinet Midi Files!

And Van Basco's Karaoke Player

You can mute the clarinet part and using this program. How cool is that?!

Anyway, I'm still wondering what that accompaniment gizmo is called. Maybe it's been so long "they" don't make it anymore. I'm pretty sure the guy was a Yamaha representative, as he was trying to sell us on Yamaha clarinets...not that there was anything wrong with that? This was like 1997. He also let us try ligatures, where I got to try the BG Super Revelation...I was like, wow at the time...until I got a customize inverted Bonade lig from a friend with the middle cut out.

I'll stop rambling now! :)

Did he have a computer with him? It might have been SmartMusic. You can buy the instrument microphone through them, and it actually follows you. The other program (if memory serves me correctly) doesn't follow you at all, so you wouldn't need the microphone to operate it.
