Two stories I heard from my elementary band director in the 1960s, wonder if anyone else has heard either.
First, there is the clarinetist (Chicago Symphony, I think), who claimed not to have made a mistake in 9 years. (surely this must mean in public performances, and not include practice).
Then there was the sax player who started to play one day and keeled over dead. Someone looked at his mouthpiece - yuck, all sorts of strange growth inside, obviously hadn't been cleaned in years (hmm., is there a moral here?)

All I can say is, don't believe everything you hear. It's amazing how stories change over the years. Ever play telephone as a kid? ESP eddiesclarinet.com

Dear Ed,
Oddly enough I thought that very thing about your dinner at the Italian restaurant with Iggy Gennusa, but since it is a 'first-person-story,' I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
