Hi everyone,
I have an unknown Metal clarinet called regal. I have looked on google but could not find anything about it. It Has the word "Regal"on the bell with what looks like wings beneath it. it is A one piece clarinet and says "Made in italy" just under the top cork where the barrel goes on. would anyone be able to tell me what it is and how old it is. also is it beginner/intermediate/professional and what would it be worth. S/N 5536.
Thanks
John

It is most likely a student-level instrument. Nearly all metal clarinets were student level to be honest. Most likely it was made prior to 1940 as the production of metal clarinets declined in the 40's and had pretty much stopped entirely by the mid-1950's. The value of the instrument is dependent of the condition but regardless it will not be very high. In as-is condition it is likely worth $50-$75. If it is in playable condition (doubtful) then it might be worth ~$100.
Unfortunately most metal clarinets don't play very well and as a result people are reluctant to invest in having them repaired. Most end up as curiosities on someones shelf or turned into lamps. The only metal clarinets that are really worth anything are the handful of professional models and a few of the better intermediate models. A good reference site can be found here: http://www.angelfire.com/in2/easyliving/Vintage/Silver-Clarinet.html

Other than a few made by Rampone, the Italian metal clarinets have a poor reputation. I hate to say this, but it may be worth more as a lamp.
