 Reed suggestion for Buffet/Chedeville MP

I'm currently using as my main setup a Chedeville-blank Buffet C Crown mouthpiece with excellent results using (gasp) Rico Royal 3.0 reeds. Tone, response, projection, intonation, freedom from squeaks, etc., are all fantastic with this setup.

Trouble is, the Royals seem to die way before their time, and I'm going through reeds at an alarming rate. Can anyone suggest a similar but longer-lasting alternative to the Royals?

Well, the Royals are the only French-filed cut reeds from Rico besides the Grand Concert Select Thick Blanks. Have you given those a try? Also the Rico Reserve Classics are fantastic reeds as well. The other alternative would be Vandoren V12s. These would all be similar cuts to the Rico Royals.

I have tried Vandoren Traditional and V-12 on the C Crown without much success. The tone loses a lot of resonance, ring, and sparkle versus the Royals, and tends to become just too nasal.

I haven't auditioned any of the Rico Grand Concert models. The Thick Blanks sound interesting. If they could be described as a V-12 that blows more freely and with more resonance, that would be just what I had in mind.

Yeah I would give them a try. My experience with the Thick Blanks is that they definitely vibrate a little more with more ring and resonance. However, for me it's a little much. But, for you it may be perfect. And grand concerts are cheaper than Vandorens. Give em a shot!
