Hello all,

I am looking for a 19th Century Bass Clarinet piece to play on my recital.

Suggestions?

Thanks,
Bb

Transcription. Is there a reason you have to have a 19th century bass piece?

How about a transcribed violin sonata or short piece by Kriesler or Yssye(Spelling?)? Or "The Swan" by Saint Saens? Or "Kaimmen Ostrau" by Anton Rubenstein, all romantic, 19th century type pieces?

I had originally picked out Bozza's Ballade but my professor has asked me to look around for a 19th century work since all the rest of my program that I've selected is 20th century.

I wanted to perform something on bass.

Transcriptions are fine. Good suggestions of recordings would be nice too.

Thanks,
Bb

I once heard the first two Schumann Fantasy Pieces on bass clarinet; they sounded decent. Bass clarinet in A would be nice to have, though.

The Baermann (sometimes ascribed to Wagner) Adagio is nice on (Bb) bass clarinet, and very easy to play.

Afraid you are unlikely to find a bass clarinet instrument in "A", so forget about that.

Weber Concertino works well on bass clarinet.
First movement of Brahms Sonata #2 likewise.
I've performed Weber Adagio and Hungarian Rondo -- low C instument helps.

I've heard trombone players perform Schubert and Brahms lieder to very good effect -- don't see why this couldn't extend to basscl as well.

Many Schumann pieces transcribe very well.

You could play Schumann's Adagio and Allegro (originally for horn.) There is probably a published version, or you could transcribe it yourself.

I know it is 20th century, but the Vaughn Williams studies in English Folk Song would probably sound good on bass.

@ Larry, the Andante and Hungarian Rondo? I will second that piece. It works very well. Contact Howard Klug for a Bass Clarinet low C arrangement.

I stand corrected: it is Andante and Hungarian Rondo. Thanks!

If you care to go for Baroque, here's a Telemann sonata already transposed.

Unless you're required to choose a 19th century piece, you could steal from the best: the first five of Bach's six suites for unaccompanied cello work very well on bass clarinet. All six have been transcribed for clarinet but imho the necessary revisions to make no. 6 work for a single-voiced instrument are too drastic for that piece to work well on clarinet. (Bach wrote the 6th suite for a five-stringed instrument.)

I think there are several transcriptions available, but the one I own is J. S. Bach, "Six Suites for Violoncello transcribed for Bb Clarinet" by Ulysse Delécluse, Edition Leduc. It doesn't matter that the transcriber seems to have had Bb soprano clarinet in mind, since the suites are unaccompanied. I like them better on a lower-pitched clarinet.

Alea Publishing publishes a bass clarinet arrangement of the Bach suites that is good. Personally, I prefer to read the cello part and transpose. That way I can decide what is important to include and what to exclude.
