Author: TeeCeeGee

Hi, thinking about buying an older selmer. Have playrd a few 10g's but never a 10s...whats the difference sound & blowing wise? which do you prefer, if any?

(btw I own a great old CT, just looking to expand my collection)

10g was an attempt of Selmer to copy and improve the Buffet R13. They can be very nice instruments but I think many players still prefer a R13. The 10g does not fit in the historical line of Selmer clarinets as the 10s. The 10s is a 'real' Selmer. Compared to the CT, the 10s has a more centered tone and improved intonation. However the bore size is middle of the road and that makes the 10s not that 'special' anymore compared to the older larger bore Selmers. But the 10s certainly is a good, easy to play, instrument that is very suited for jazz and dance music. For classical music I personally think the 10s lacks some tonal depth that e.g. Buffet is famous for.

I played a 10s for many years. The toneholes are larger than Buffet style instruments for starters. I've always found Selmer clarinets easier to play loud on, and since I was primarily playing in big bands and concert bands when I bought it, that was a factor in my choice.

I pulled out my 10s on a whim yesterday, as I'm playing clarinet on two different shows this season at Stratford. It's repertory theatre, so I'm working on two musicals at different theatres; the shows are cross-cast. The only instrument in common is clarinet, so I was hoping to pull out the 10s and use it on 42nd Street.

What I found is that I've gotten so used to a Buffet style bore and toneholes that the 10s feels like a completely different animal now. I'd have to use a totally different mouthpiece setup to make it play its best, and I just don't feel like doing that little dance.

I keep toying with selling the 10s, but it was my first pro clarinet, and it has some interesting key mods done by Steve Fox - way back in about 1988!

Much has been written about the 10G; try a search on this board. Anthony Gigliotti, late principal at Philadelphia and a Bonade student, got his [Buffet] clarinets from W. Hans Moennig, the eminent craftsman. Gigliotti and Selmer later worked together to create a clarinet modeled on Gigliotti's Buffet that had been adjusted by Moennig. This clarinet was the 10G. Check the board, because some 10G's can be very good and some can be not so good.

Selmer 10S was the first pro Bb I played on as well. I still own it--it's the loudest clarinet I've ever played, and great for jazz. As mentioned above, it's very different from an R13 or the 10G.

The 10G I played on (only once, and only as a test) handled very much like an R13, but lacked the raw power and 'Selmer' sound of the 10S.

Ok, interesting....so like I said, I've played my friends 10g & its a good one, but much different than my CT.

I am looking for a more modern keywork Selmer & perhaps give my CT a little rest for a while. I don't play much clarinet except in big bands, so are you guys saying the 10s has more guts, more of the Selmer thing that I like in the CT. (Obviously not exactly, but more in that direction?)
fwiw, I am NOT an R13 person & probably not ever interested in owning one.

10G, as has already been said, was modeled on an improved R13 and was meant to make the hand adjustments that Moennig pioneered unnecessary - the hope was mostly to build the improvements into the assembly line and have the clarinet come from the factory ready to play. It was intended for the symphony market. If you don't like R13s and play mostly in big bands, you probably won't find that a 10G satisfies your needs or your taste.

Hi,

I picked up a NOS 10S at one time but sold it pretty quickly. I was playing an R13 as well as a Series 9 at time. It was a nice clarinet but did not have anything very special to recommend it. Details on its pedigree were pretty hard to find but as others have said, it preceded and evidently was quickly replaced by the 10G.

I own all three of these Selmers- a CT, a 10G and a 10SII ( currently called the St.Louis model).

The 10SII has greater resistance and power and is brighter than either of the others. The CT blows freely and goes well with the big band I play in. The 10G is more mellow and my concert band concertmistress ( who also plays a 10G) prefers its sound, but I'm still working out some intonation issues in the upper clarion- seems to go sharp suddenly on A and above.
I like the keywork on the 10SII best- very comfortable for me, the 10G not so much. So, I guess I like them all, and haven't found the urge to join the Buffet Maifiosi as yet.
