It's interesting to read the thoughts on teaching style and what priorities are set for students. I thought it might be nice to also look at the students' perspective of what makes for quality lessons, as needs vary with skill level, age, expectations, etc...
My own desires have included basic ability to read some simple music, duets and such,...playing scales and practice with good tone and timing...appreciation for historical musicians and writers that I hear or need to hear...
I won't be involved in professional or college level performance, so having fun is my major concern. Much respect for those that are doing more serious study and playing, but my teacher understands my needs as and adult beginner, and has taylored my instruction along those lines...
This board is a wealth of information, and the folks here have been very helpful in my quest for better playing experience. Just wanted to say thanks, and get some other students views on the subject.

Age of course varies. Some of the younger kids are sorta forced into playing and really don't have any interest in playing. They never practice. Others simply love it and practice about an hour a day or more and love playing in the school bands.

You get at a VERY important point. The COMMUNICATION of goals for the student AND teacher is key to accomplishment and enjoyment. There has been far too little of this in my experience on both sides.......regrets, regrets.

As a student, I take lessons to improve my playing ability. Since I compete with solos occasionally, my lesson time is usually dedicated to those pieces, and we work on technique whenever the opportunity arises. I do plan on at least minoring in music, (I'm a senior in high school) so I also want my lessons to prepare me for college. But my favorite part of lessons is probably when my teacher notices/corrects something I would have never even known to look for.
