Beethoven Trio From Septet (on Oboe)
Author: Ken Shaw 2017

Beethoven's Septet, Op. 20 http://imslp.org/wiki/Septet_in_E-flat_major,_Op.20_%28Beethoven,_Ludwig_van%29 was written for a clarinet-loving prince, so the clarinet (along with of course the violin) takes the lead throughout. Beethoven arranged it for a trio for clarinet, cello and piano, Op. 38 http://imslp.org/wiki/Trio_in_E-flat_major,_Op.38_%28Beethoven,_Ludwig_van%29. As a trio, it's wonderful but tiring, since there's no violin to share the load.

Keisuke Wakao, the Assistant Principal Oboist of the Boston Symphony, played an exceptionally fine performance of two movements live at http://www.jwfan.com/?p=2168. I think everyone should listen to this. The phrasing is wonderful, the tone is varied to match the character of each phrase, and the musicality is hypnotizing. Listen to the complete concert. The last two short pieces are very beautiful.
