im teaching myself clarinet. i know the notes, but am not familiar with the concept of scales (majors and minors). they must be important because i always here people say "play in x b/#. what are they, how do i learn them? can you recomend a very clear, simple web site? thanks.

How about the song from the "Sound of Music," Do-Re-Me. This is the basic major scale..... two whole steps, a half step, three whole steps and one more half step...... you can start this on any one of the twelve notes (c, c#, d, d#, e, f, f#, g, g#, a, a#, b ) and have a major scale based on that note.

thanks. i just got them. for example, [G4] becomes a [Gb4] starting from Db major onwards [grin]



now the issue is that its gonna take me a LONG time to get the twelve of them well enough that if someone hands me a sheet of music and says "play in f major", i'll be able to do it well without taking 10 minutes to translate it. any tricks?

Pretty much every piece of music will have a key signature at the beginning telling you which notes to play as sharps/flats. Not really a big deal...
