 Graduate Programs

I recently finished my grad auditions. They all went really well and for several of them I was recommended for admission by the faculty I auditioned for.

People keep asking me what my top choice is and I have no idea. I honestly didn't expect to get into most of them and I thought the decision would be made for me. I was wondering if any of you have attended these schools or would be able to just give me some things to consider in selecting schools.

I auditioned at

McGill- Montreal
DePaul- Chicago
New England Cons.- Boston
Boston Conservatory
Stonybrook- Long Island

Stonybook isn't my top choice simply because I'm looking to get away from home (I'm from LI) and I want a more urban area....

Hi!

I'm currently doing my undergrad at McGill. It's really a fantastic school. All of the teachers are super great and the city is wonderful. The McGill Symphony is amazing, Maestro Hauser really knows music and playing with him is a learning experience every single time.

Let me know if you have any specific questions!

Joanna

Some things to consider...

Did you get to have a lesson/meet the teacher(s)? This compatibility is always a deciding factor. As you already know, you're going to spend a lot of time with this person, and even more so in a short amount of time as a graduate student.

Money..."Money Talks" as the saying goes. Are any of the schools offering you scholarship/assistantship? Which ever offers you the higher percentage of tuition is also great. You have great schools listed, so there shouldn't be much worry there.

Location...Are any schools in a location you like more than others? All other things equal, this could inspire you to do well there, rather than loathe over the fact that it's too cold/hot or too rural/urban, or whatever your nuisance may be.

Focus of the University...Research/Student Centered/Conservatory...These are things to think about. I went to a conservatory for my bachelors and masters and am now at a research/student centered university for my doctorate...IT'S A LOT MORE WORK lol. This could be a consideration for you as well. I wouldn't wait to go to a more research centered school until the doctorate if I could do it all over again, but I would stress that a little variety is great.

Hope that this helps you and good luck!

You have some excellent choices. I'm not sure who the instructor is at Stonybrook.

Since your auditions went really really well and you were acccepted to all of those schools, all have really good instructors, I'd also take a look at Yale. Dave Shrifin is one heck of a player and was a member of the Cleveland Orchestra at the age of 22 or so. He was also the instructor at the Cleveland Institute along with Stanley Hasty who was also the instrustor at Eastman and he was filling in at Cleveland for a year or 2, replacing the great Bob Marcellus who went to Chicago due to medical issues. Anyway, Dave is one of those elete proformers of the world.

The schools you listed, see if you can get some sort of scholarship, which may help your decision. Well done with your auditions. It's pretty dare hard to get into all of those schools.

Eastman, in Rochester NY, could also be something to look at. The city is suffering a lot and renting a place near Eastman should be very low. Perhaps half the price of renting from the schools you stated above such as New York and Boston.

Eastman Kodak recently filed bankruptcy, thus the reason for lowered rentals. Several hundred employes lost their jobs.

By the way Eastman Kodak has a really fantastic hall to perform in. It was redone about 2 years ago. The acoustics are so much better as they took out about 400 seats and made the hall smaller and narrower. It's a really cool place to perform in and perhaps you can google it and take a look at it.
