 Buffet Serial Number Question
Author: fuzzystradjazz

I'm trying to track down a serial number for a one-piece A Buffet Crampon Low Pitch wood clarinet. The serial number starts with (what looks to be) letter "H" followed by three digits. I'm not having much luck searching on Buffet's website.

Any direction would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Fuzzy

Your clarinet is too old to be included in the Buffet list. Try looking here:

Thanks Jack!!

In fact, the link you provided me reassurance that I HADN'T written the number down wrong - it does start with 1Hxxx (with the 1 in front - I had been fearful that I had written it down wrong, so I omitted the 1 in my earlier post). This seems to match the 1913 products - though the clarinet in question looks very nice to be that old.

The link you provided does state, "The accuracy isn't guaranteed, but it should be a good start."

Does anyone know whether or not I could depend on this 1Hxxx Buffet serial number being listed at 1913?

On another note:
Ken Shaw - thanks for the great answer you posted back in 2001 pertaining to "donut/doughnut" keys! I just found your post and it was the perfect answer for the next question I had planned to ask!

Cheers!
Fuzzy

I think the list is pretty reliable. Also, 1913 is consistent with the dates I've seen for other one-piece Buffets.

I recently bought a Buffet E11 (I think) with the number 622xxx. This is well outside the number list shown. It's made in Germany, in good condition and plays well. Can anybody suggest a year for it?

Your clarinet was made for Buffet by Schreiber. Unfortunately I have never seen a serial number list for the Scheiber-made Buffet's posted anywhere so you will likely need to contact someone at Schreiber for more information.

I am fairly sure that the E11 follows the same serial number list as the B12.
The highest number B12 (probably no more than year old) instrument I have worked on in recent months had number 1070xxx.
If I extrapolate linearly from an early B12 that I know was purchased 12/89 with number 366xxx then your E11 would be about 1997 give or take.

Of course production was not neccesarily linear but its nearest I can guess.

A 1912 one piece full Boehm Buffet clarinet I have still plays great. This model was said to be used in Italy so that A clarinet parts could be transposed down to the low Eb. I have the matching A clarinet with a low Eb made in 1921 which also plays well. Some of the donut key Buffets from that time also were quite good. Good luck!
