 vandoren original resurfacer vs atg
Author: Vubble3

i just ordered the van. original resurfacer at a suspiciously low price at muncy.com. Just curious, are they as flat and lasting as the glass resurfacers, what's it like? I also witnessed the atg system, it looks like a rip off. it looks like a little board with a block of disposable sandpaper.
sorry if im being ignorant.

Vandoren original resurfacer = Too rough, feel like a 100 grit sandpaper (to me). I tried one of my friends, couldn't even move the reed. (I think) The purpose of it is to flatten warped reeds or to soften reeds. You will see it yourself soon anyway.

ATG = if you have enough money, get it.

As has been mentioned many times on this board, for the ATG you're paying for the educational material much more than for the equipment that comes with it. Money very well spent in my opinion.

The cool thing about the glass thingy is that it leaves no additional particulate rubbish save for the reed shavings themselves. Run it under water, wipe it, and it's good as new........try that with your 400 grit sandpaper.

And you have the wand thingy for fine vamp adjustments.

I used needle files, from Sears. Instructions from "Romancing the Reed", found in The Clarinet some years ago.

Good point R Smith. Professor Rieckoff only used these rat-tail files from the basic blank to the very end, and made spectacular reeds.........long process though.
