 R.I.P. Lorin Levee

We lost another fantastic musician last night in Lorin Levee. Lorin was the co-principal clarinetist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra for the past 31 years. What a marvelous career he had, and may he rest in peace.

When I was fourteen, I some how started communicated with him because I saw gear he was selling on ebay. Then over AIM, he told me he played on Wurlitzers and I ignorantly started going on and on about how great LeBlancs were... I'm lucky he didn't reach through the im window and rip my young head off... haha.

Anyhow, great guy. One of the most fantastic clarinetists of our day and he took the time to talk to some young kid just starting out.

Some of the first orchestral recordings I heard growing up were of Levee with the LA Phil. Always an inspiration.

God bless him and his family.

Lorin Levee caused a sensation at Interlochen in, I think, 1961. I was there when, at the age of maybe 10, he walked out with a clarinet almost as tall as he was and tossed off the Spohr Concerto #1. Everyone knew he was headed for great things.

I found out at 3 Am this morning from Michele, but wanted to find an article before posting.
