 Clarinet/Flute Duet?
Author: EspadaRoja
Date:   2012-02-21 23:59

A friend and I are looking for a good clarinet/duet piece for an solo/ensemble festival. I play clarinet. Since it is difficult to provide a proper estimate of how well we play I will simply state how long we've been playing. We're both juniors in high school. I've been playing clarinet for 5 years. My friends has been playing flute for 3 years but he is an exceptional player (he played clarinet for 4 years and then switched to flute). We are both in the top ensemble in our high school. Please help.

78 Duets for Flute and Clarinet (volume 2) by Voxman (Rubank)

Among the number of possibilities in the book there is an arrangement of the first Beethoven clarinet/bassoon duet, arranged for flute and clarinet which would probably be perfect for you.

I don't have an exact name in front of me but there are a series of three Kulau duets arranged for two clarinets that are fun and not too tricky.

Can you include a pianist? That would give you even more options. Waltz and Interlude by Clare Grundman is straigntforward, and doesn't need a virtuoso at the keyboard to pull it off.

Morton Gould wrote a set thats not terribly difficult and quite nice, if I remember correctly.

There is a 3 volume series of flute clarinet duets published by Southern music- some of the arrangements are quite nice.
rubank has a series called 78 duets in 2 volumes.
Robert Muczynski wrote a duet for clarinet and flute.

Another idea if you are using/can use a pianist is the Shostakovich waltzes - quite fun and tuneful.

Malcom Arnold, John Rutter

Chek out the Michael Webster's website, he and Mrs. Leone Buyse founded a kind of "flute-clarinet duos association". Mr. Webster himself have written many pieces and arrangements.

Oh, I forgot the Robert Muczynsky's duets.

If you like contemporary and new techniques: Mario Lavista's Cuicani.

the choro n 2 by villa lobos is a beautiful brazilian piece but you'll need a good flautist to play with you and an A clarinet
