 Harrison reed cases
Author: Ed
Date:   2012-02-07 20:50

For those folks who remember them, I have a couple of the old Harrison reed cases that are no longer functional because the clasps have broken. Does anybody know where I might find some clasps to replace them? I have searched but cannot find anything small enough.

Thanks
Ed

Hi Ed, No need to throw out those Harrisons. Simply attach a small velcro patch to the top and bottom of the case. Then use the smooth velcro strip to connect the top and bottom spots - thus keeping the case closed. I use this method on similar cases to the Harrisons and it works well.

Here's a hook latch that might work, though it looks a little flimsy http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=16945.

You can check your local hobby shop, or look for people who build miniature items. A local jeweler should be able to put you in contact with a "jewelry findings" company that has what you need.

Roger Garrett makes his own cases and has written about the flimsy fittings on the Harrison case http://garrettmusicproducts.com/Reed%20Cases.html. He should be willing to advise you on replacement hardware, and he has refurbished Harrison cases http://www.idrs.org/IDRSBBS/viewtopic.php?id=12010.

<woodworker.com>

Has magnetic latches consisting of a 3/8-inch diameter x 1/4 inch long magnet and a 3/8-inch diameter ring with a hole for a flat head screw. The magnet glues into a hole on one side, and the ring is recessed and screwed to the other.

You'd need at least a half inch wide edge to install these. You'd probably also have to run down a short #4 screw for the mating ring to avoid having it poke through the top of the case.

This size latch requires 2-lb of force to separate ... and less if you don't get them lined up

They have the advantage of not snagging on anything and not releasing when you don't want them to.
