I know a lot has been written about barrels. Probably around once a week or so.
I bought a new Bb R-13 and with a Moenig barrel 65mm's, if that matters.
Problem - some notes pop out instead of a nice smooth scale. For example if I'm playing a simple G major scale the G just above the staff pops out louder then other notes so the scale is not even sounding.
I then put on the barrel that came with the Bb horn and this issue stopped completely, but now the problem is a few notes of the notes are on the flat side. Any suggestions about other barrels, such as Greg Smith's?
Anyone experience this? Are there any suggestions out there in the clarinet cyber world? !!!

A different barrel may (and often) have different resistances and pitch tendencies that you would need to smooth out through familiarity. This is MUCH easier said than done. I got a Chadash from Greg Smith that was such an amazing match for the mouthpiece that I chose that I couldn't believe what a difference it made to timber and dynamics (and by dynamics I mean it could play really, REALLY LOUD!!!!). Even though I was in love with the sound, the difference of the throat note pitches was too much for me to put in the extra time necessary to overcome and I gave up on that barrel. I still dream about it and wonder what could have been.

Yes, the second register G is often found to pop out too loud on clarinets. My great recent R13 with the stock barrel does that too. It is an acoustic phenomena that can be explained easily and it can always be toned down by the player and should be nothing to worry about. These phenomena are also present in the double reed instruments and sometimes need alternate fingerings to make life easier. Instrument makers really do not want to discuss them as there is very little that they can do about them. Good Luck, Bob!

Wow! I guess I'm not the only one having this happen. I'll go make an appointment here in LA at RGD. They have 2 good repairmen that have a good reputation. I'll also sent a note to Greg Smith. I'm not sure if these 2 guys at RDG want their names posted so if anyone wants their ames email me and I'll call them and see if this is OK. I now have 2 horns under warranty from there so I'll check in and make an appointment. Maybe they can do something or have assorted barrels to try out. I think it's a 3 month waiting list. Hope I live that long!!!

I've had that barrel nightmare, too. I had one that sounded sooo sweet and produced 12ths so wide that I could not manage the clarion register intonation...
