 New Solo For Spring
Author: janlynn
Date:   2012-01-20 14:10

Solo Suggestions for an early college level player (although I'm 45 and not in college :)

Have already played

"Gigue" Bach Cello Suite

Mozart Concerto

Hindemith Sonata

Scene and Air from Luisa di Montfort (Bergson)

want something fun and not too serious - and not one of the more common - ie saint saens, poulenc, brahms, weber

looking for something fun and different i guess...

Chopin Minute Waltz, Flight of the Bumblebee, Hora Staccato, Dizzy Fingers, Clarinet Marmalade, and on and on.

I did some work on the Milhaud Duo Concertant last year. I thought it was a fun piece.

I second the Milhaud Duo Concertant. It begins with a nice catchy melody, and it's a fun piece.

Gerald Finzi's Five Bagatelles, Gabriel Pierne's Canzonetta, Carl Nielsen's Fantasy, Germaine Tailleferre's Arabesque, and Aaron Copland's Sonata (the transcription of his violin sonata) are other nice choices.

Yesterday afternoon, I was looking at the clarinet sheet music offerings at justforwinds.com and came across Howard Hanson's Fantasy for clarinet and piano (originally for clarinet and chamber orchestra). It appeared to be an interesting selection, but I've never heard of it. Has anyone played this piece?

The Hanson is nice, though perhaps a bit simple for what janlynn is looking for. It's roughly 4 minutes of scale and arpeggio passages that move through the different ranges of the instrument.

Please keep the ideas coming. The 2 pieces I had in mind (composers Holiday) and (Oblivion) seem to be out as I am having a hard time getting the music.

I do like the Milhaud

Possibly flight of the bumblebee

any more ideas? is there somewhere a list of repetuiar (sp?) that can give me ideas?
