Hi

Does know where/how I can see the bass clarinet part for Shoenberg Serenade? I might play this at the end of the year and "we" only get the parts shorly before. I need to see the part much sooner. Any ideas?

Thanks

I think there is a cheap edition of the score published by Dover.

Cancel that. I was thinking of the Chamber Symphony.

I played it last year and I believe it was a rental. I suggest that you find a score, as it does require quite a bit of preparation.

The pocket score (published by Wilhelm Hanson) is for sale, though it's more than a bit pricey: US$75 or so.

I didn't know that chamber ensemble pieces could be rental-only, though perhaps I shouldn't be surprised that some of them might well be.

Anyway I will need to see the part (or score) before I can decide whether to play this or not. So no "real" way to do this...?

If you do practice it from the score, I used to do that alot when I was a student, Id either copy the part or play from the score, you need good eyes, make sure you know if the score is in C or transposed to Bb or A. Not always easy in 20th century music. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

Perhaps a university library might have this item in their collection, or perhaps your local university library might be able to arrange for an interlibrary loan. Consult www.worldcat.org

Or perhaps you might find out who rents this piece, and see if you can get a "perusal" copy. It sounds like that's what you want to do at this point: peruse the work and see if it's feasible. I'm not a fan of Schoenberg, but to each one's own.

For what it's worth, I was called to do the performance of the Serenade about two-and-a-half weeks before the performance, and I didn't see the part until the first rehearsal, two weeks before the performance. I was replacing somebody who dropped out. I had to work really hard to get my part ready; it's a wickedly difficult part but was fun to get it together in the ensemble. I didn't have it perfect but I think I did a credible job. So it is do-able in a short period of time if you are willing to do some serious shedding.

I think the conductor's score was written in concert pitch. The bass clarinet part goes to written low C, so while looking through the score if you see low B-flats you know that your score is in concert pitch.

Thanks, but part or score, Bb, C or A, and how long before the concert I have the part, is unfortunately not important yet. What's important is to see the part before I can agree to play it. How easy or hard is also not so important now. I simply want to see this is something I want to play. I already listened to piece and know it's great. But I need to see if this bass clarinet part is something I want to play.

I'll try the place that rents the parts and ask if they can suggest anything.
