I saw an ad yesterday in Facebook, for sheet music to a modern clarinet/piano piece.

Somebody has us targeted...

Unless you go through contortions to prevent it, Facebook tracks your friends and the links you follow. Then they put up ads that match your interests.

I use the Firefox add-on Adblock Plus, which eliminates almost all ads. There are similar add-ons for other browsers.

Yup, if you mention clarinet, it also tags it and advertizes.

I also use Adblock Plus and Facebook Disconnect on Chrome browser. I just don't trust what sites like FB and Twit does with data, especially like the facial recognition feature and their policy of never deleting anything including your account.

"Facebook ain't free out of the goodness of their hearts"

Isn't that the truth!

The piece has a highfalutin name, but the surprising thing was that, upon following the audio link, it was listenable and moderately priced.

My method of blocking ads on Facebook is to decline all offers to join Facebook. That site is a privacy vampire.

To hear the audio, click on the "Scorch Plug-In" box above the score.

I signed on to Fazebuk using a throw-away e-mail account and it hasn't been gummed up. Not yet, anyway. And I decline all the invitations that need access to my friends and e-mail, even from close family members.

That is what makes FB so attractive to marketers. It is extremely cost effective when compared to other types of advertising including Google Adwords etc.

FB value proposition is that the advertising algorithms will target specific market segments efficiently and cheaper than alternatives.

That is one reason why Wall St is saying that the valuation of FB is $100 Billion (US). (Not what I think it is worth).

Sure, but you can't ignore all the great things that happened because of Facebook, like some of the biggest protests in more than one country. It helped create the biggest (and completely justified) demonstration we have ever had in my country. Not to mention connecting musicians all over the world...
