 Ab clarinet recording
Author: bmcgar 2017

For those who have never heard one, I've posted an audio file of an Ab clarinet here:

http://home.comcast.net/~bmcgar/Aflat.mp3

Enjoy...or not.

B.

For some reason, the link isn't working for me, and I can't figure out why.

I'll look into, but please let me you if any of you ARE able to access this.

Thanks.

Curiously enough, it may be related to the "http://" at the beginning.

Try:

http://home.comcast.net/~bmcgar/AFlat.mp3

[ No, it had everything to do with user error ( Aflat.mp3 vs. AFlat.mp3 !! :) ) Mark C. ]

Not user error.

I changed the format of the file.

So PFFFT, Mark! (-:

It's official: I am now too old to hear an Ab clarinet.

All I notice are strings. Too many years near a flightline took their toll.

Thanks for posting this! I've read about these ensembles for years, and have also wondered just how they sound.

I guess the point is not to hear the Ab so much. It's been said that Stokowski had written in flute doubling the first violins on many things to obtain that Philadelphia "shimmer."

This genre is called Schrammelmusik -- traditional Viennese coffee house entertainment played by two violins, a bass guitar and an Ab clarinet. A whole CD of this kind of thing was put out by a group called Thalia-Schrammeln. They're very polished -- certainly including the Ab clarinetist (not clickable, I'm afraid):

[ It's clickable now ... Just surround the address with < and >. Mark C. ]

Thanks for posting a link to the CD description -- I'll have to get this one now.

That sample you linked is a piece in D and G major, so I imagine this is a really a high G clarinet... playing in those keys on an Ab clarinet wouldn't be much fun!
