Suggestions for a recently composed peice

First of all, I am new to this forum and excited to be a member. :D

I am a second year student at a community college, wanting to transfer to another school in 2013. My past repertoire that I have performed has been Weber's "Concertino," the Hindemith Sonata, the Mozart Concerto, and, what I am currently working on, the Brahms sonatas. I was told by several musical associates that I should have a "older" work prepared as well as a more recent one (the most common suggestion is within the last 50 years.) to audition with for when I transfer. I am looking for suggestions on such pieces. I own two pieces by Scott McAllister (X and Black Dog), a piece by Dan Welcher (Dante Dances), and my director owns "Damn" by John Mackey. I was also considering taking a look at the Ticheli Concerto and the Copland Concerto. Yet I am entirely open to suggestions. So, what do you think?

Thanks!

Ask the place that you are wanting to transfer to. Some of them have a specific list of pieces they want to hear. If they don't have a list, you can still ask the clarinet professor for recommended pieces.

The recommendation you will probably get here will be to pick whichever piece you will be able to perform at a high level.

Good Luck!

Talk to your teacher, who knows your playing and can advise you about pieces that match your current playing level.

Some less-well-known 20th century clarinet pieces that I love: the Castelnuevo-Tedesco sonata; the Martinu sonatina. These aren't obscure to clarinet people, but I think they probably edge into the 'masterpiece' category. If you're thinking of doing Copland, look at the Finzi concerto too, they're both gorgeous. The Berg Four Pieces is also worth a look. All of these are by dead people, though... I don't know a lot of really amazing still-alive-person clarinet works that aren't nastily difficult, unfortunately.

Unfortunately, also dead: the Maltese composer Charles Camilleri wrote several pieces for clarinet. One of those is his Concertino for Clarinet and Strings. The parts for the string orch are not (yet) available. The clarinet and piano reduction is from Metropolis.

The outer movements are sort of "edudie," but the 2nd movement is gorgeous!

Gary Van Cott carries the Concertino at a realistic price.

Carson Cooman is alive, relatively young, in fact, and I really like his Lyric Pieces which can previewed on itunes. Don't know whether they would be difficult enough for an audition though.
