I just proved to myself that I am getting old
Author: miclew

I got my Pedler back from the shop yesterday (and he did a GREAT job with it). I took it out this morning to play it for the first time. I haven't played at all in 8 years. I lasted about 10 minutes :) :) I just played Christmas carols out of the hymnal which are easy songs obviously. I had no problem with the fingerings but I have no breath endurance :) The good news is, I didn't squeak :) :) :)

And the award goes to.......michele, for the best use of smileys in a clarinet posting. Seriously, keep playing, your never to old to regain your breath.

You'll get better over the next month or so.....and then it gets worse as you approach 80.

I'm an amateur player and no spring chicken. There have been a couple of times when I've had to stop playing for a month, and when I come back to the instrument I have no wind at all. It comes back with a regular practice schedule.

Congratulations on your return!

Getting old beats the alternative! [hot]

Have fun,

That's not because you're getting old, it's because you don't work out. Do something that makes you use your breath more, bikes, running, jumping jacks, push ups, whatever. Use those lungs you'll live longer and better too. ESP

Yeah. Your breath is out of shape. Playing clarinet will fix that.
Me, I'm a very amateur clarinetist but I have to sing a lot because I'm a songwriter. Alto clarinet did more for my breath support than any singing exercises.

I totally believe in and do as Ed says (cycling, jogging):

Ed and others have offered some very good advice.

I'm 74, and if I didn't do aerobic type exercises (for me, racquetball, bike riding, and/or treadmill on days too bad to get out), I likely would not be able to hold my own in our community band.

Even with regular exericise (and it's a rare day that I miss), I still struggle with my embouchure and wind, but I have to think how bad it'd be if I did no exercise at all. As Bob says, the nearer one gets to 80, even with exercise, the harder it's going to be, but I will go down that road kicking and screaming before I give in.

I'm 74 also. If you want to improve your breath/endurance take up the flute. I started about a year ago and the little silver tube takes twice as much air as a clarinet; at least it does until you take a couple of lessons, then it takes only 25% more air.
