I'm just curious if this is a common issue with the ligature or if its just mine.
I have a leather Vandoren ligature with 3 pressure plates. http://www.vandoren.fr/en/ligaturesleather.html
The issue I'm having is with the screw. When I tighten it, it gets "jammed" and the reed is still able to move on the mouthpiece. Other times it locks up when I'm trying to remove the ligature and it won't allow me to loosen it. (I've actually caused a nice callous on the side of my finger from taking it on and off.)
I love the ligature (minus this hang up), and I didn't know if anyone else had experienced this problem or if perhaps it is just my personal ligature.

It sounds kind of like a stripped screw. maybe see if you can get a replacement. Their customer service may be able to help you. Give it a try.

I have a problem where when I undo the ligature (the screw works fine, doesn't jam), the ligature stays tight, and so I have to force it open. Is this similar to what you have?

Locking while tightening seems odd for this ligature. I always apply a little key oil to the moving parts of ligatures when I get them and re-apply every so often to keep the parts moving freely (and without undue wear).
While loosening, perhaps the two bars that hold the leather strap are not sliding freely across the bolt (well, then there are the new versions that work like the Optimum). At any rate tightening should not be a problem and seeing about recourse from Vandoren (or your dealer) may be the best bet.

RJS,
I have had the same problem, I think. The leather sticks to the mouthpiece. Is that what you're relating?
I apply a little clear shoe polish to the inside of the lig and give it a good buffing.
That's not a permanent fix, but it won't damage anything, and I can live with the few seconds it takes me every few days.

its not the leather that sticks, its the screw/mechanism that jams up. I'm going to contact Vandoren and see if there is anything they can do to help me out, I just bought this ligature a few months ago and had this issue since day one.

I had a similar problem with a Rovner ligature a while back. The fix is very simple and permanent.
Most likely the hole in the metal rod through which the screw passes was not chamfered properly and has a sharp edge that is catching on the screw threads when you try to remove the ligature. I would disassemble the ligature, remove the rod, and lightly chamfer both ends of the hole with a rat-tail file. You only need to remove a very minimal amount of material. This will keep the rod from sticking and preventing you from removing the ligature.

Paul and Steve have described my problem pretty well, the ligature doesn't slide across the bolt for me. I'll give the filing a go.
If you've had this problem since you bought the lig, it would have to be a manufacturing defect so they should easily replace it.

Dear David,
Gee, I don't see the stripping problem on the "old" leather as you described. I have three of them (two used ones from previous owners) and there is no sign of any wear to the mechanism (all the flat turny thingies).
I only mention this since I have a tendency to really crank down on these suckers (with the metal plate of course).
