 Buying an USED CLARINET MOUTHPIECE?
Author: Wertty

What should I consider when buying a second-hand clarinet mouthpiece from eBay? It's probably at least ten years old. To be more specific, it's a B45 I'm looking for. I am especially interested on how the quality may be. Thanks!

I would be really careful that there are no chips/nicks on the mouthpiece especially on the beak or rails of the mouthpiece. B45 are really open, good mouthpiece for someone who is looking for their first "nice" MP, I own a slew of Vandoren mouthpieces. I haven't used my B45 since high school though.

It could be very good . . . or it could be very bad. If it's not chipped or cruddy from mineral deposits, that's an encouraging sign. If it's clean and obviously well cared for then it's more a question as to the accuracy of the facing and the flatness of the table, just as with a new mouthpiece. The proof (as always) is in the playing. Can you return it if you're not satisfied?

Here's my tips for buying a mouthpiece from e-bay or any other auction site:

1. Unless the mouthpiece is brand new or the seller is a mouthpiece maker/refacer assume that the mouthpiece will need to be refaced. Treat the mouthpiece as if it were a blank. You may be pleasantly surprised on occasion but at least you won't get burnt.

2. Don't buy a used mouthpiece that you could just as easily buy new (unless it is a fantastically good deal). This is especially true of mass produced mouthpieces where the difference in cost will generally not be high enough to make up for not being able to try before you buy.

3. Don't assume that a mouthpiece from a famous maker will necessarily be a fantastic player. You will frequently see people on e-bay paying crazy amounts of money for vintage Kaspar's and Chedeville's without knowing how well they actually play. Really good playing mouthpiece don't get resold very often so bid accordingly.

If you really do want a Vandoren B45 shoot me an e-mail. I have one that I got with a used clarinet a while back. The rails are in good shape but I really don't have any interest in playing on it myself as I already own several much nicer mouthpieces. You can have it free of charge.

I bought my B45 brand new for $59. I never use it anymore as I tend to really squeak on mps with an open facing. Perhaps it will work better for my daughter when her arms get just a bit longer. I am pretty frugal, but I doubt I would buy a used mp if I couldn't play test it.
