Guy Chadash owns the Buffet R13 that Robert Marcellus played in the Cleveland Orchestra. I've heard it played, and it's an amazing instrument. Now if only we could get the fellow in London interested.

A few decades back, Scientific American ran a series of tests on a disassembled Strad. I recall seeing the patterns talcum powder made on the plates when they were excited by a speaker coil at stead pitches.
The synthesis of a matching instrument consisted of scraping the plates to give the same deformation patterns as the original and then making the f-holes and interior volume resonate (like a whiskey jug played like a flute) to one of the strings.
I think that the choice of glue and the luthier's skill enables the disassembly and restoration of string instruments. Talking the owner into letting you take a Strad apart could be a terrific challenge.

Yeah. It's the best Bb I've heard. McLane's A clarinet (at least as played by Harold Wright) is the best A, although Alex Williams and Kal Opperman had amazing ones, too.
