 Sock Cymbals?
Author: Fuzzy

I'm trying to find an old Sock Cymbal setup to use (they are similar to a 10" high-hat, but really short - coming up only to mid-shin). I'm putting a small trad jazz group together, but we are absent a drummer...so, I figured a sock cymbal would help get us by. I've seen them used this way before (very effectively).

However, I've been unable to find many sources or prices for them online. Does anyone here use them or know where a person might obtain one (already looked on ebay). Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Side note: I'm looking as much for the foot peddle apparatus as I am the actual cymbals. In fact, the cymbals aren't that important to me - I'm just looking for something to emphasize 2&4 - it doesn't have to sound pretty. I'm thinking of stealing a foot pedal from a modern bass drum/set and rigging it up to hit a wood block if I can't find an old sock cymbal. The Loose Marbles group (you can see them on youtube) use an old beat-up sock cymbal to great effect.

Thanks!

A Hi-Hat setup can be adjusted up and down. Why not use that? It comes with the foot pedal.

Thanks for telling us about the Loose Marbles. Really nice.

Ken,

Thanks for the quick reply!

Good idea about the hi-hat, I might revisit that angle. I have a Hi-Hat (actually an entire drum set), but if my memory serves me correctly, the hi-hat is really big (and heavy) compared to the various Sock Cymbal setups I've seen. I'm trying to figure out something that's easy to travel with (airplanes, backpacks, suitcases, etc.) I'll dig the hi-hat out of storage and see if it's really as big and heavy as I remember.

Glad to hear you enjoyed the Loose Marbles!! You might also enjoy Tuba Skinny, the Smoking Time Jazz Club, and (perhaps) the New Orleans Moonshiners. There's a lot of talent out there - I just wish it didn't take me so long to find them all. (Albanie Falletta too)!
