 Mouthpieces
Author: clarienet

I have been wanting to try some new mouthpieces. I currently have the Vandoren B45, and 5rv lyre. I was thinking of maybe a gigliotti or one of the new Vadoren Master mouthpiece kits. Which one would be more worth the money?

Thanks, Melissa.

What are you looking for that's different from either the B45 oir the 5RV (both somewhat different from each other)?

Gigliotti is an excellent mouthpiece if you're looking for the type of sound and response it's designed to provide. We haven't had many people here comment on the Vandoren Masters. You can do a search in the archives and find what's there.

There are a lot of makers using Zinner blanks, which are different in many respects from the Gigliottis or the Masters (or any Vandoren).

What do you want to accomplish by changing mouthpieces?

Most mouthpieces are worth the money. It all depends on what you are seeking in a mothpiece. Without that information, you would simply be throwing money away.

Are you unhappy with your current mouthpieces? What are they NOT doing for you? Have you consulted with a teacher about what different type of MP might help you with issues you are currently having?

If you find the "perfect" mouthpiece it's worth whatever you can afford. It's not a matter of money but rather value to you. I'd suggest you try as many MPs as you can get to try to find the proper fit for you. ESP eddiesclarinet.com

I also have the B45,the 5rv lyre(88 profile),and an m13 (profile 88). what don't you like about the 5rv??? This is the newest one i have got and its almost perfect for me. I love the sound and the intonation is great after i warm-up thoroughly. if i want to go sharp though im in a bind, it plays on the flat side. i find it very similar to the m13 except less drastic and much more rewarding. the b45 is also a very good mouthpiece in my opinion just a bigger and brighter sound. not a bad bright either its more like a nice watery blue while the m13/5rv are blackish. i dont love the articulation on the b45 though. it plays very well in tune.

oh and just a tip of advice that i try to stick to, "new dosnt always mean better"- goodluck on your journey to the holy grail of mouthpieces
