 Bass Clarinet Chamber Music

Looking for chamber music written between 1850-1900 that utilizes the bass clarinet. Anyone know any pieces or resources to find such information?

Probably the best known piece is Mladi by Janacek (WW Qt. + BC). It's an excellent piece, and not terribly difficult.

I'm not sure when the Janacek was written but he was born in 1854 and it is a good piece. I've never come across anything in the chamber music field before the 1900s. Here are some suggestion but they don't fit exactly into your time frame. You could transpose the Mendelssohn, died 1847 though, concert pieces for clarinet, basset horn and piano playing the basset horn part on the bass clarinet. I have a live performance of #1 on my web page, it works pretty well but is a challenge. You could also transcribe the Beethoven Duets for clarinet and Bassoon, before 1850 though, or the Glinka, born 1875, Trio Pathetique for Clarinet, Bassoon,or cello, and piano. I don't know the year it was written though. If you're handy with Finale or Encore, which I am not, it should not be much of a problem for you, as long as you make sure you're in the right key. A quick google search puts the Mladi at 1924.

Since Janacek wrote Mlada as a 70th birthday present to himself, 1924 is probably the date of composition. The date I find for Glinka's Trio Pathetique is 1832.

I agree with Ed that you may have a hard time finding anything. While it was sometimes used in orchestral works during the period you are searching, it didn't really come into it's own as a solo or chamber instrument until much later.

While not originally written for the combo, the Monti Czardas (circa 1904) works well for bass clarinet and piano. There is a version for clarinet and piano you can play from.

Best regards,
jnk

Al Rice's book From the Clarinet d'Amour to the Contra Bass discusses repertoire. It's not cheap, at $98.95 http://www.vcisinc.com/clarinet.htm#C1394, but it's available used for $20 plus shipping (it's *heavy*) http://used.addall.com/SuperRare/submitRare.cgi?author=albert+rice&title=clarinet&keyword=&isbn=&order=PRICE&ordering=ASC&binding=Any+Binding&min=&max=&exclude=&match=Y&dispCurr=USD&timeout=20&store=ABAA&store=Alibris&store=Abebooks&store=AbebooksAU&store=AbebooksDE&store=AbebooksFR&store=AbebooksUK&store=Amazon&store=AmazonCA&store=AmazonUK&store=AmazonDE&store=AmazonFR&store=Antiqbook&store=Biblio&store=BiblioUK&store=Bibliophile&store=Bibliopoly&store=Booksandcollectibles&store=ILAB&store=Half&store=LivreRareBook&store=Powells&store=Wbm&store=ZVAB.

How about the Phantasy Quintet by English composer York Bowen? There is a really nice recording on iTunes with Tim Lines (an old professor of mine)

Haven't seen any mention of the Hindemith "Septet." For woodwind quintet plus bass clarinet and trumpet. Quite a nice piece of music!

The Bowen was written even later than Mladi, around 1932, I believe. (Wonderful piece, though.)

I believe Hindemith wrote that after 1900 since he was born in 1895 unless he was a really prodigy :-) . ESP

Honestly there is more chance of finding chamber music for basset horn within those dates than there is of finding bass clarinet chamber music

>> Sad but true! <<

AFAIK Metallica didn't use a bass clarinet and it's from the 1990s anyway :)
