 Dvorak 8 transposed for Bb?
Author: Tobin

Hi everyone,

I have a student playing in the local youth symphony -- Dvorak 8 is up on deck. She doesn't have an A and no intention of going to college for music.

Yes, she should learn to transpose on sight. Yes, she should write it out (which she may have to!). Can we move past that now?

Does anyone have a Bb transposition for second clarinet? First and last movements?

I greatly appreciate the help,

James Tobin

Lucks Music Library sells transposed parts for $8 each. Can you ask the orchestra to get the parts for you? Or maybe they have transposed parts already on hand?

Hi Davyd,

Thank you -- an excellent resource that I was unaware of!

It's probably always a good first step to ask the librarian if he/she has the parts needed. I've found that lots of times the librarians of local orchestras - pro, amateur and youth - get transposed parts with the sets they buy or rent but don't understand what they are, so they never offer them to the clarinetists (or trumpet or horn players) without being asked. Or the opposite happens - they give out the transposed parts and don't distribute the original notation unless asked.

Hi Karl,

My students have populated the clarinet section of this orchestra for that past years, so I'm already familiar with the organization. They don't have a librarian for these purposes as they usually borrow music from VCU or another school. In the past no transpositions have been available.

That doesn't rule out the possibility that they exist, but the director of the orchestra is Chuck West, clarinet prof at VCU. If they existed he would put them in the kid's hands.

Thanks, James
