 Yamaha CSG III intonation problem
Author: ClarinetTone

Guys,

just bought Yamaha CSG III.

Tone is just i was searching for, and i think its a very good worked clarinet and i am very happy with almost all things...

But there are two things that i think Yamaha has not improved from CSG ...

Why the C#/G# borel made in the tube??

D/A is really low! and also is higher D.

And of course, C#/G# is very deaf!!

Why they didnt make the C#\G# borel out of the tube just like in the Buffet Tosca??

There is any way to get a shaper D\A without touch the wood? it is really the only problem i find in this awesoming clarinet!

Sounds like you should have bought a Tosca if that is what you are comparing it to.

um Dileep he was just talking about that specific issue using the tosca as a comparison. I think he's made it clear that he still enjoys the instrument...

Hi.

My C#/G was a little stuffy. I have cork pads, so maybe you'd want one installed there to be able to do this. I sanded down my pad SLIGHTLY. Just enough to get rid of the ring that the tone hole puts on the pad. I then beveled the edge so air escapes a little easier. If you don't feel comfortable doing that, have a repair person do that. It may effect intonation, but it didn't change much of anything on my instrument, so give that a try.

As far as the A/D you may just have to get used to the new intonation. If it is unchangeable with embouchure than maybe you could have it tuned by a professional. It is harder to tune that note because there is no pad over the next tone hole to be adjusted.

Hope I was helpful.

Thank you Tim

of course i have touched already the C#\G# key and get it a bit away from the bore like you say, but i think that it is gonna be a problem of the pad (cork pad make these notes make so deaf...) and from the bore design.

For the D\A its really hard to put it on intonation whenp playing high dinamics.

I think I will send it to some yamaha technician for opnenin a bit C\G hole so D\A sounds a bit more open...

Thanks you, an Dileep, don troll here please, really not necessary....

my clarinet is very nice, better than tosca, i was making a comparison only in C#\G# bore.

what mouthpiece are you using--the clarinet--as it goes up a 12th not an octave --is tuned by the cone in the mouthpiece and barrel. when i tested this new design i could not fault the intonation as it fell within the natural configurations of 10c either side. Many R13s are suffering intonation problems-either very flat or quite sharp because they will use mouthpieces that do not have the correct cone in the bore and/or the bore is too long or too short.

the other problems that are mentioned can be cured by the correct venting which is often overlooked by even the most experienced technicians. the clarinet needs much more venting than is usually accpeted for othet woodwind

Hi Anton,

very helpful answer.

I am using a Viotto B3+ mouthpiece that didnt have any problem with these notes (D\A) in my Rc clarinet.

Maybe I can try a m30 mouthpiece and it will fix the mouthpiece/cone issue that you are telling to me??

Lot of thanks!!!

A question. Do you know if CSGH-III is available? Or that model is just with silver plated keys? Thanx

prof anton weinberg:

You mentioned that certain mouthpieces mess with intonation in R13s. When I my Bb clarinet play with piano, I can play my Vandoren M13 in tune with the piano. However, I can't use it in orchestra because it's relatively quite flat (especially on my A clarinet, even with a 64mm Chadash barrel). My teacher and I both love the tone I get with the M13. Can you suggest something similar (tip, facing, etc.)? I'm currently using a Fobes CWF in orchestra. I like that very much, too. It's a little less resistant than the M13, though.

I recently e-mailed somebody at Vandoren to see if they were looking at making an M13 that wasn't a series 13 (so it would play sharper). The person said there were no such plans and suggested I try an M15 that plays at 442Hz.

These clarinets are the most consistently in tune clarinets I have ever played in my entire life. Mouthpieces can greatly affect the intonation. Go try some Vandoren's to see if there is any difference. I play on an M30 13 and my pitch is right where it needs to be.

For me, the 5RV Lyre is very close to the M13 and this one is available in the "Standard Pitch" version. The 5RV Lyre may be slightly more close but it is a good match for the "feel" of the M13.
