Hi All;
Michael Carroll, a former NYC composer & jingle writer, just posted interviews he has done over the past few years on his radio broadcast, The Mikie Show. The interviews are clever and informative, and cover a wide range of subjects, mostly centered around the Arts, but he does stray a bit! All very witty and fun.

I cannot imagine playing the same show for six years and remaining free on the streets. Congradulations to your endurance and success in NYC. Thanks for posting this interview. Even though a bit unfocused, due to the random style of the host, it gave us an interesting glimpse into the life of a Broadway musician--especially to this old clarinet player who has never been there.

My wife thinks John sounds like Michael Douglas. He presents himself very well....articulate and humorous. I think he should take over the interview program from Mikie. Nice job John.

Good stuff...always good to hear from a NYC insider. Just 1 question, John: you say that you warmup for 20-25 minutes then it's call a half hour before the show. So in other words, you are at the theatre about an hour before curtain? Or is your warmup time AFTER the call?

Thanks for all your interesting comments. I believe live music should always be an open discussion and in full view of our appreciative public.
Hi rcnelson: Yes, I arrive at 1 hour before showtime, so I'm at the Theater by 7pm for an 8pm downbeat. I do a quiet private warm-up, after assembling my 5 horns! At half-hour, I continue my warm-up with all the other musicians in the pit, & we're ready to go at 8pm.

What do you mean Bob? Do you, as I, occasionally use vibrato, or perhaps never?

John...first of all I thought Mikie was too wordy....I wanted to hear you. So, I was "on edge" already and feared the all too familiar vibrato rant...so opted out.
In my opinion vibrato has its place, therefore, I don't agree with those who have a closed mind against it. I probly misinterpreted your short statement about the subject. I think Stoltzman is a good example of a player who knows how to use it.
