They don't hide the fact that they are selling fakes. For example, they say that they will make you any "brand" guitar that you want. This should be a give away!
(Then they say the guitar will conform to the picture and the picture is of a fake Buffet clarinet which should put even the most gullible on notice<g>...)

The sad thing is that most of the victims are probably parents on tight budgets, who try to find bargain instruments for their children who are beginners. These fakes look so obvious "in person" (I often see them at flea markets and live auctions) that they wouldn't fool an experienced clarinet player. Anyone who knows enough about clarinets to read this bulletin board probably wouldn't get tricked online, either. I hope elementary school band teachers make a point of warning parents through school bulletins *now*, during back-to-school buying season, instead of waiting for children to show up on the first day of beginner band with instruments that will only frustrate them.

Just yesterday, the news reported there's a fake Apple store. They said the products were so close to the real, even experienced Apple users were being fooled. Seems soon, we'll have to question everything we buy, what a mess.
The thing that bothers me the most is why is this permitted by this country and the world? It seems so obvious there's some political motivation to keep it "quiet".

Most of us do that every year--not only "elementary" (I prefer 'Middle School'), but also Junior High & High School. But many of us also know that parents often have minds of their own, especially when putting out the "big bucks" for a quality 'fun activity' school extra--either band or orchestra--and will look for the cheapist alternative they can find, regardless of our advice.
I was somewhat lucky to teach in a metro school system that owned enough instruments to rent to all beginners for one year and so my parents got a little more education as their children progressed through their first year of class lessons--specifically by having to re-supply essentials (reeds, valve oil, books, stings, etc) at our major and quite reputable music stores. The two other smaller districts I was employed by all had school rental programs that were run by reputable music stores that rented quality instruments. In rare cases where the beginner would show up with an "instrument from home", at the very least, I had the opportunity to inspect it before they started lessons. However, their are smaller and poorer school districts "up state" where schools are lucky to have any kind of band class (much less strings) and anything brought into the band "area" (which could be the stage or caffeteria) is welcomed. Those music teachers also try, but their is only so much you can ask for of an economically challenged community where NASCAR is "king" and the local pub takes priority over their childs "school'n".
So, my overly wordy point is, we band directors try to do all we can to educate our parents to beware of those inferior brands and prevent them from wasting their money on instruments that will only lead to their childs frustration with music--and weaken our programs as those kids drop out. It's sad, but a lot of parents do not even take time to read those school bulletins or even come to their childs concerts or recitals, much less parent conferences at the request of their childs classroom teacher. Please do not assume, LL, that we do not recognize the problem or need to do more. All of us are just as concerned (frustrated) as you are. tvm

Maybe musicians unrelated to schooling programmes should stand up and add stuff to their pages that inform about the merits of known-to-be good secondhand instruments compared to cheap internet sources of questionable quality...
Then again, who'd read that stuff? Not parents, probably. Oh well.

And most kids will probably want to choose a brand new dubious quality instrument that's shiny over a good quality used one that isn't so shiny.
When I worked at a retailers a mother and her kid came in to buy a new alto sax. The mother was willing to get him a Yamaha 25L as it was the best instrument in the long term, but without even trying it out the kid nearly threw a tantrum as he wanted a Buffet Evette as "that's what the other kids at school have". So she went against her better judgement and bought the Evette just to keep him happy.

I came across the place some time ago while searching a good deal on saxophones. They were using pictures of other manufacturer saxophones for what stuff that they sold. They had a pic and title for a Selmer Paris Reference 36 tenor sax with a price of something like $400; and pics of other various brands models. I'm sure their model was nothing like the real ones pictured.
