As a COMPLETE BEGINNER, can anyone explain this:
IF I PLAY MY B FLAT CLARINET, ALONGSIDE MY TWO MATES PLAYING THEIR GUITARS, WHICH ARE TUNED TO "E", WHAT ADJUSTMENT IN KEY STEPS, DO I NEED TO MAKE, IN ORDER TO PLAY IN TUNE WITH THEM?
It is probably a stupid question to ask, but no one has explained this to me, and I can,t find any mention of it in any of the tutor books that I have read!

they play e , you play f# . Transpose everything one whole tone up
E => f#
F => G
F# => G#
G => A
...
B => C#
..
etc
But playing and improvising in concert E ( F# for you ) on clarinet is , even for professionals and/or experienced players , very very difficult.
Start with some things in concert Bb, F , C or the corresponding minor keys G-, D- , A- ( for you C, G , D or A-, E- B- ) for a start.
Unless you don't have to improvise , then nearly everything is playable with some study.

You can always ask your guitarist friends to use a capo on the 1st fret so they're in F - then you'll be playing in G on clarinet which is a much easier key to get around.

When transposing from a C part you always go the opposite direction from the key your instrument is in relation to the key of C. Bb is one step lower so you have to play one step higher. A, as in A clarinet, is a minor 3rd lower than C so you have to play a minor 3rd higher, Eb clarinet in a 4th higher so you would have to play a 4th lower. etc. I think you got it.
You could always ask you friends to tune the strings a step lower, just kidding, enjoy. ESP eddiesclarinet.com
