I recently purchased a cheap Eb from ebay. Not a bad horn at all. No buffet or selmer but I have yet a need for an Eb yet. What mouthpiece/reed/lig would work decent for this clarinet? anything better than the stock is for sure! I regularly use A yamaha CSG with M13 and V12s. So any suggestions?

I use a Yamaha 4c with a Rico ligature and cap. Works very well for me.

Can't go wrong with a Vandoren B44 or 5RV, just cut off some Bb V12 reeds and get a BG ligature. Should work a treat :p

I also find the Fobes to be a great choice. Add a Fobes barrel for an even bigger improvement.
The Hite mouthpieces play very well for a bit less money. Robert Scott barrels also work very well.
There are lots of choices to tame this little guy.

Vandoren 5RV is a good place to start - try to avoid wide tip openings as they will make the high notes difficult to speak and control.

I think Richard Hawkins makes a fabulous Eb mouthpiece...he makes two models, the S and the B. I prefer the S.

Redwine makes a good Eb mouthpiece. It is made so you can use cut off Bb reeds. I have tried both regular Eb reeds and Bb reeds and always go back to the Bb reeds.

Thanks 2E. Btw to the OP.. I currently use a mouthpiece crafted by the well known to clarinetists here, Mr. Gregory Smith. I tell you, I will NOT go to another mouthpiece simply because this one does it all. The perfect tone and tunes extremely well especially way the heck up there. I use Vandoren White Master German clarinet reeds and they were FANTASTIC. Better than Bb and way better than Eb reeds. I would definitely try at least some cut off Bb reeds. I just don't dig Eb reeds on my mouthpiece.

I play on a greg smith mp too now. It was a big step up from the Vandoren B44 which was a good stock mp that came with my RC prestige. I also got some of the buffet chadash barrels that greg picks out. I was surprised at how much difference the chadash barrel made, evenness of response and tone was amazing and coupled with the mouthpiece very nicely :p
Plus, Greg is a lovely guy who will call you to work out all the details and is happy to discuss pretty much anything and frequents this board frequently, highly recommended! haha

FWIW--I play on a vintage (1960's) Selmer HS* mpc with a Winslow sop sax ligature. I use Forestone Bb reeds (F3.5-4) cut short to accomodate the shorter lay of the Eb mpc. This setup works equally well on both my Yamaha 681 or my Bundy (Selmer) resonite effers. The only difference is that on my Yamaha, I use a Fobes extension which improves the eveness and tone quality of the upper register. I also have a Charles Bay custom mpc which also plays well, but I find the higher register notes--F6 and beyond--respond easier with my HS*. However, what works for me may not work at all for you--you really need to try as many setups as you can and then decide for yourself. Use our suggestions as a starting point....and then, "happy hunting" for that perfect mpc/reed combo.
btw--I do not like Eb clarinet reeds. The wider tip of the Bb reed produces a better tone quality for me--less like "Holloween".

I'm considering switching to a Selmer HS* for my Eb (currently on a Vandoren B40) among other choices. Does the Fobes extension fit on the Bundy? My Eb is a Bundy. I use a Robert Scott 40mm barrel which I like very much. I'm still experimenting with reeds and ligature.
One thing I've noticed is that when people mention tripling Eb with their Bb and A in some cases, the Eb bell is put inside another bell. How well does it fit in there? My Bundy bell sticks out of my R13 bells a lot and I was wondering if they usually stuck out a lot or fit right in (I'm assuming that my different brands have something to do with this)?

Backun barrels are worth a look too - a noticeable improvement in tone and tuning on my Leblanc Concerto, with a Fobes mouthpiece. It's cutaway design means you can use untrimmed Bb reeds too. Tried the Fobes extension too, but it offered no noticeable improvement to the above setup.

I recently acquired a Backun barrel for my Bundy (I wanted to be able to use uncut Bb reeds since I tend to hurt myself unintentionally when cutting them down; Bb reeds sound better on my refaced Vandoren B44 than Eb reeds do). I figured since Bundy is made by Selmer, then I should get a Selmer barrel for it. Makes sense, right? Well, the barrel doesn't fit (tenon socket too large; if you tip the clarinet upside down, the barrel slides right off). How much of a difference is there between the Selmer and non-Selmer barrels?
Will Backun barrels made for Buffet/Yamaha/Leblanc fit my Bundy? I don't have a lot of money at the moment (credit card is nearly maxed since I'm moving next month and preparing for impending surgery), so I can't afford to order a bunch of stuff to try and I can't order from Backun directly. That's why I shop auctions and secondhand places a lot; I generally have good luck doing that.

My 1930s La Fleur Eb flat plays beautifully with the original wooden mouthpiece. I am really worried that I won't be able to replace it if anything happens to it. Is there anyone out there in the UK who makes wooden mouthpiece copies?
