 Single Case for "A" Clarinet
Author: Ron
Date:   2011-06-16 13:04

I recently sustained a neck injury and and can no longer use my double case. I manage by setting my B-flat and A-clarinets separately in an office caddy with two wheels and a long handle. I have a very flimsy A-clarinet case in which I ripped out the innards and rigged with styrofoam. It would be nice to have a sturdier case to house my A-clarinet.

Can anyone suggest where a single case for an A-clarinet can be purchased? I've looked at all the major online music retailer with no success. Another option would be to buy one from someone who would be willing to sell theirs. Single cases for A-clarinets cases do exist but are very difficult to locate. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Ron

I don't know if they're still available, but you could get an A version of the B12/E11 style plastic single case.

Would something like a BAM X-Light Double Clarinet Case (granted this is not a single clarinet case that fits an "A" clarinet, as you asked), where the Bb portion of the case remains empty be acceptable? (e.g. http://shop.weinermusic.com/BAM-TRAVELER-HIGHTECH-DOUBLE-Bb-A-CLARINET-CASE-3028TH/productinfo/CB1DTH/).

The case is not only luggage carrier (i.e. your vernacular-office cart) ready, but has backpack straps that--unless your neck pain extends to your shoulders and/or back, might be the best way for you to carry an instrument anyway.

The pulling of a floor based wheeled cart, while I'm glad is an option that doesn't cause you discomfort--or at least excessive discomfort. is bound to cause ancillary use of neck muscles as arm tension transfers to shoulders, and then neck.

A moment ago, searching all of craigslist (allofcraigs.com) I did come across a seller of a "A" clarinet and case, for less $ than I see the BAM case going for new. The case looked to be in reasonable condition.

As with all online buyer forums, caveat emptor (buyer beware).

I wish you relief for your pain and many happy clarinet playing days ahead.

If you call around, a local music store or one of the major retailers might be able to special order a case for you. Or you could try contacting the manufacturers, directly.

Best regards,

I've been told the clarinet I refer to in a prior thread, otherwise appearing on Craigslist, is keyed in Bb, not A. Sorry for the well intentioned error.

Given that it doesn't fit your needs, that I offered an alternative, and warned of the risks of online sales, especially with unknown parties, please know I am at an entirely arms length from any of the products I mentioned, and their vendors.

I'll be sure to stear away from such discussions of sales going forward, consistent with the board's rules, which I hope at least, were set up in the spirit of precluding this board from being a place to transact, not a place where an independent 3rd party, as I was here, can put buyer and seller together, when asked first, for win-win exchange, in which the middle man (me) seeks and achieves no profit.

I think I'd be remiss, now that I've already caused the "damage" of having referred you to Weiner Music, to not also say that I think them a great vendor--while also acknowleding that other fabulous music vendors exist as well.

Again, good luck in managing your pain--the real goal here.

The Buffet R13 clarinet I own from about 1998 came in a single case with case cover. They probably still make them.

For a really compact solution, there's the Bass Bags case discussed in a recent thread on this forum under "the perfect Bb travel case?" I was aware the manufacturer claims it will accommodate an A, but had never tried it until your query prompted me to have a go. I can confirm it's true, although I'd never have guessed it given the small size. The ends of the two storage sections are just elastic enough to accommodate the longer instrument. However, the lining would probably wear faster than with a Bb, because of the tighter fit.

20 or so years ago, I had the local music store special order a single case for my A clarinet. It's got the Buffet logo on it (or did, before it recently broke off) but has otherwise held up well over the years. The clarinets are still being manufactured, so I'm supposing the cases still are too.
