Valente, and Wright doing the Schubert Shepherd on the Rock (Der Hirt) is among my favorite Clarinet recordings. I had a rehearsal today that was just a block from where she lives - on the Schubert.
I didn't know that she was still even alive! (nor did I know that she was still in Philadelphia).
I found that kinda cool

Wikipedia says she was born in 1934. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benita_Valente 77 is not THAT old, especially with an opera singer's lungs to keep the air going.
In addition to the famous LP with Wright and Serkin, there's another one with the same people, which is 99% as good. Either Wright or Valente sat on a stool, which creaked throughout. And there's a very good aircheck with Valente, Marcellus and Leinsdorf [thanks Greg].
Quite a voice, and a fine musician.

"And there's a very good air-check with Valente, Marcellus and Szell."
-----------
The air-check is from a symphonic subscription (!) concert programmed by Erich Leinsdorf that included this piece with Valente, RM, and Leinsdorf (piano) as well as symphonic works played by the full Cleveland Orchestra.
Leinsdorf was a leading advocate of programming chamber music along side symphonic works on a regular subscription concert.
He did this regularly with us at the CSO many times over the years with great success including pieces by Mozart (Gran Parttita) and Weill (Suite from the Three Penny Opera - with members dressed in full regalia from the time!).
These live tapes, of which there were two different performances back in those days, shows these magnificent artists in their full splendor.
If you can get your hands on these recordings, they will change the way you learn to appreciate this particular type of music making at the highest possible level.
