 Suggestions needed, please

Hello -

We need an easy piece that my son (8th grade - he's a reasonably good player for that age) can pull together in about 3 weeks, preferably with piano accompaniment.

Some sort of popular, or whimsical, fun piece would be great.

His Junior Tri-M group is putting on a recital, with the proceeds to benefit the tornado ravaged region in the south.

Any suggestions? Anything that I can purchase and print out would be the best. Thanks for any suggestions -

How about the theme from the Pink Panther? Our daugher once played a version for clarinet and piano that was rated "Grade 3" (3rd year). She had fun with it. I won't swear to it but I suspect the arrangement was by Arthur Frackenpohl.

Best regards,
jnk

Jack -

Great suggestion - however, my son's friend is playing an arrangement (by Frackenpohl) of that on trombone! So, he really can't do the same piece.

However, that is exactly the type of piece that we have in mind.

Thanks!

Marge

The Entertainer by Joplin? I always loved playing that one.

Never Bb, sometimes B#, and always B natural! ♫♪

How about Baby Elephant Walk, I know there's an arrangement of it, I've had a couple of different students play it.

There's a Gavotte by Gossec that is more classical but I've had kids and adults hearing that piece played. I think it's in a book called Solos for Clarinet, which you have to purchase both the clarinet part and the piano part seperately.

Funeral March of a Marionette is cool too, it's in the Rubank book of Solos, Easy Level. The kids I've taught this too absolutely LOVED it! One did it for one of his repertoire selections for the RCM level on the previous syllabus, which I think is sad not listed under the current one.

There is a very nice clarinet arrangement of Walking in the Air by Howard Blake. If you have seen the children's film The Snowman, you will know what I mean.

Walking in the Air (by Howard Blake, who has also written a clarinet concerto and a clarinet quintet, BTW) is a nice piece. I'd actually recommend his Suite from the Snowman. In addition to Walking in the Air, it includes Building the Snowman and Dance of the Snowmen. Your son might prefer the Dance, as it is a bit more up-tempo or it could be combined with Walking in the Air to lengthen the performance a bit. (The works are all pretty short.) If you decide on this piece, be sure to get the version for "clarinet or tenor saxophone and piano." It has been arranged for a number of other instruments as well.

Best regards,
jnk

Thank you, everyone, for your suggestions (even the Corigliano - made me laugh!) - some terrific ideas. Much appreciated...
