 Advice on Mouthpiece/Ligatures
Author: SamD
Date:   2011-05-05 04:19

I've recently bought a used Buffet E11, and It came with several mouth pieces/ligatures. It came with the standard mouth piece, and a Clark W Fobes Deput. It also came with a BC L4R Revelation, along with the standard ligature. I also own a Vandoren B45 with a Rovner MK III ligature. Since I'm not the most experienced clarinet player, (Intermediate), which is generally better for intonation? I use a 3-3 1/2 Vandoren reed. Are they about equal, or is one generally superior to another? Is there a certain combination that works particularly well?
Thanks.

The best mouthpiece is the one that works best for you. The Fobes Debut is an excellent mouthpiece in its own right, and is favoured by many players at a student level and beyond. The B45 is also an excellent mouthpiece and is widely used professionally. The standard Buffet mouthpiece is something of a compromise. There are better options. I'm not familliar with the revelation. I'd suggest a couple of hours with a clarinet, a friend with a good ear, a selection of reeds and a tuner. Play mix and match. See what works best.

Tony hit it on the head. Work with the mouthpieces first and see which one fits you best, tone, comfort, intonation etc. Then once you decide on that work with the ligatures to see which one gives you the most comfort etc. Remember, if the clarinet has an intonation or stuffy problem on some notes the mouthpiece won't have too much effect on correcting it and certainly not the ligature. Then you would have to go to a tech to see if the problem can be fixed. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com
