I have just attempted to install my newly purchased Kooiman. When I finally got it all on the instrument, I discovered that there is a gap between my thumb and the hook, so it is not taking any of the weight. The tip of my thumb was on the thumb rest case as per instructions. I started with the middle pair of holes, but then tried again using the top pair so it would be in the lowest position thinking this might eliminate the large gap. Not so. I expected that I would have to make a slight change in hand postion, but this seems a bit extreme.
Comments, suggestions?

The hook is adjustable up and down with a hex wrench. The hex wrench moves two screws that are above and below the base of the hook "inside" the casing, on the right.

try posting pictures of what your thumbrest setup looks like so that we can probably give you some pointers. As mentioned above, the kooiman thumbrest is adjusted via a hex wrench for the part that goes over your thumb's joint. that way the tip of your thumb is comfortable while your joint alleviates the stress on your thumb!

I have taken a couple of pictures, but will have to wait for the "computer expert" to be home to show me how to download them. Seems like every time he does something to my computer, I need another lesson in how to use it! That aside, the Kooiman web site has diagrams of the next generation Etude 2 which is what I have. And again, there does not appear to be any way of moving the hook part relative to the casing. I fear it may all have to be returned, but I will persevere some more. I have a concert this Sunday, and after that I will make a more concerted effort to make it work. Meanwhile, any further suggestions are welcome.

Hi, I purchased the same TK thumbrest as you mentioned above, I'm not
sure what or where the gap is taking place with yours but my only guess would
be if your hands are smaller than the anticipated average thus allowing the gap to take place but cant be for sure just a guess without actually seeing it.
Mine has been a great help to me and it took some getting used to because
of how it curves over your thumb and somewhat away from the clarinet, I
have not experienced any gaps with mine that you mention but I do have large hands and it(thumbrest) hugs my thumb perfectflly taking the weight
off the small part of my thumb and puts it on the larger part closest to the hand itself. I have not had any pain issues since I installed it a few months ago
anyhow hope this helps and hope everything works out ok for ya.

A couple years ago I tried the Kooiman "Etude" and found the same problem. Never did figure out how to make it work and moved on to a neckstrap and thumb saddle instead.

The Kooiman Etude 2 thumbrest doesn't have any adjustment for the hook, unlike the previous model which has a threaded mechanism for raising or lowering the hook independent of the adjustment possible with the baseplate. All up/down adjustment with the Kooiman Etude 2 depends on the three different pairs of screw holes in the base plate and the small amount of adjustment possible on the ratchet slide.
Your hands must be very small for you to have this problem with the Etude 2 and my guess is that the only way you'll get it to work for you is to take your clarinet to a technician to get two new screw holes drilled into your clarinet perhaps 3/8" below the original screw holes for the primitive thumbrest which originally came with the clarinet. A good technician will look carefully at your grip and measure exactly where the new screw holes need to be drilled.
If you get this done you won't regret it. This is a fabulous thumbrest and should eliminate most if not all of the pain you've been suffering on account of your clarinet addiction!

Thanks all for your suggestions. And thanks Janlynn for your comments. After reading so many glowing reports of this item I was beginning to think that I was being a wimp saying I could not make it work for me. Obviously one size does NOT fit all. And I really have to wonder why the adjustment option was eliminated from the current model.
While I have experienced some feeling of strain in my wrist, it has not deteriorated to pain, so not sure I am ready to have new holes put in the instrument. Will have to give it more thought.
Meanwhile, back to the practise room!
