 CSO Audition Final Today

Any word yet?

My hunch is Mark Nuccio, or Patrick Messina. Mark is there, not sure about Pat.

Dang.......I've been by my I-phone all day--HOW COULD I HAVE MISSED THE CALL.....again?

Seriously, I am pulling for John Bruce-Yeh to be appointed permanet Principal. I do hope he is a finalist. But then, it sort of reminds me of a favorite joke my old college band director, Pro. Ray Dvorak, who often said that "an expert is someone who is fifty miles from home." The CSO auditioners are probably looking for such an "expert", not realizing the one they already have in their own hall.

No Messina - he posted on Facebook, and if he were entrenched in the audition, he would either post about it, or not post at all.

They should just hire me and be done with it.

HAH! [tongue]

If they appointed John Bruce Yeh, they'd then have to advertise, audition and appoint another associate principal to play Eb and the whole thing would start all over again ...

My moneys on Nuccio.

Not necessary, 2E. Just move Gregory Smith up to the chair vacated by John--he is an excellant efferist and (btw) "pretty good" with the sopranos. Then move Lawrie Bloom from the bass chair to second to replace Greg and hire me to play the remaining bass parts. We both play Walter Grabner mouthpieces so it woud be an even "swap". If that isn't acceptable, bring in EP from the Baltimore and I'll go there. Bottom line: appointing John Bruce-Yeh as permanet CSO Principal Clarinet (which he so eminently qualified and deserving) could be worked out with little difficulty. The audition for second would be an easier decision, minus the need for a "world class" name--just an excellant player. And there are probably a few of those already living in Chicago.

In any case, my advice to John is to arrive at all rehearsals and concerts EARLY, sit down in that principal chair and don't move over for anybody. The CSO will always sound better because of your clarinet(s).

I don't know.....John Bruce Yeh plays a Yamaha.... LOL!!! JUST KIDDING! Great player from the little I've heard of him, and certainly has a great reputation.

I think Nuccio or Yeh are both excellent choices, but the truth is any of the 6 will do a great job. Can't really go wrong!

Never heard either of these two live but I was unlucky enough to once by yeh's recording of the Shaw, Bernstein etc. I take it this is an early recording as it is awful!!??

William, thank you for moving me into the Chicago symphony but it won't work. First of all, Lawrie won't want to move down to second, he's playing a solo chair and moving to second in my opinion is a move in the wrong direction. More work, less recognition. Then there's the problem of me, I'm already passed retirement age so they may not be too keen on hiring me for only a few years but I'm flattered. ;-). When Ricardo turned down the job several years ago someone on this board suggested they hire me for the principal position, I was really flattered then, but had to decline that too because I was already passed normal retirement age back then. Besides, Chicago is too cold for me. I agree with most people, give the job to John Bruce already or hire some kid right out of school already. ESP http://eddiesclarinet.com

OK, after reading this thread, I'm confused.

Does anybody actually know who was in the final? :-)

Does anybody actually understand the audition process? :-)

Got me stumped. I wonder what the audiences think.

Bassie, I'm an audience and I know what I think. The whole process is nuts, and it sure does make Chicago look bad (to me anyway).

Haha Bloom would never relinquish his chair! Well, not without a fight. He's fast ESP...

@RedChair - check out John's recordings with wind ensemble of Daugherty's "Brooklyn Bridge" David's "Fantasy Etudes, Book 2" McAllister's "Black Dog" and Burrit's "Duo Concertante" he did a few years ago on Naxos. It's a nice collection and showcases his flair very well!

LOL--I guess if I were Greg Smith, I would also fight giving up the second chair to be the Principals assistant. So.......let's just leave everyone where they currently are with John Bruce-Yeh as Principal, and let Maestro Muti get on with making great music with a great orchestra (and their great clarinet section, as is).
